We had to have the handle replaced. Apparently they develop a lot of rust in there over the years. You might try some WD-40, but if you want it fixed right, a new handle may be in order.

I had the same problem, I took the seat out cleaned the whole thing with a wire brush on my drill. Then I used white greese adjusted everything and now it works perfectly.

Took everything apart tonight and at first it seemed to work as it should.Then I noticed that as a natural movement when applying it, I was slightly pulling the handle to the right. The release mechanism that activates with the button on the handle was not hitting the where it should to release. I tightened everything and slightly bent it more in line, cleaned it up, lubed it and it's working as it should.
