ok.. so i have been having a growling noise coming from my tranny... i changed the fluid and it still makes the noise.. i was thinking it could possibly be the throw out bearing but it doesn't always make the noise.. only in a certain rpm range..and if i ride the cltuch it still makes the noise? i put like 2.5 quarts of fluid in it?? what do you think??

Mine has always whined...it's a characteristic of the ZF, as I understand. I like it...it's very "mechanical".
Does yours do it in all gears? Find a coupla' other C4 owners in your area with the ZF6 and compare...maybe you don't have a problem after all.
its not a whine.. something isn't right... i know what they are suppose to sound like.. yes its all gears.. just under certain conditions.. highload for example... like the bottom of gears just before the cam comes in... or like 1200-2200 rpms...
How many miles on the transmission? Have you changed the oil regularly? What kind of oil did you use? If it only does it under load I'd guess worn gears or bearings and it may need a rebuild. I'd also check the driveshaft U-joints. I'm only guessing and baseing my guess on what I've read here and at ZFDoc. I just changed my transmission oil and used the BMW/Castrol 10W60. I've got 63K miles and don't think it had ever been changed. But I can tell the shifts are smoother and the gears are quieter. Good luck.

My ZF6 growls at low RPMs especially when cold. (Sounds like it's grinding up gravel). After a couple of trips thru the gears, that pretty much disappears (though not completely). Extreme lugging can always produce the sound. Been that way for 7 years.
Bill @ ZFDoc says it needs a new pilot bushing. He indicated the repair can wait until clutch time (still a few yrs away). I think he was also trying to tell me that a newer, fluted style is the fix to that problem. (Don't know if pilot bushing and throw-out bearing are the same or different items).
I've heard others describe similar noise that's turned out to be U-joints. Don't know how to help you make that call.
My car has recently started making a similar grinding sound, but only in 2nd gear. If feels and sounds as if the car is lugging and stalling out but the clutch is depressed. It just recently started, and for no apparent reason. I haven't been beating on the car or miss-shifting, it just started one morning. Any more input would be appreciated. How can you tell, when indeed it is the worst case senario and the tranny is failing????
