Default Broken Shift Lock

95 Auto, my shift locks seems to be borken: e.g. when I'm in Park and I'm trying to shift into another gear the button won't depress and I can't shift. I basically have to use either a lot of force or wiggle the shifter back and forth a little...and the button will sometimes depress.

Anyway just wondering if those symptoms sound familiar to anyone, or if anyone has any suggestions on how to repair it (beofre I bring it to chevy and pay them $75 just to looks at it and keep my car for 2 days). I'm confident it's the shift lock, but I'm not real sure how it all works.

Thanks

I have that problem on my SUV, have to press the brake pedal really hard (must be a sensor under the pedal that needs adjusting). Don't know if this helps or not.

I just answered tech thread for someone else with instructions how to fix. Your brake interlock solenoid under the console is going bad, take console cover off, you will see little white plastic solenoid, left/rear of shiftg mechanism. Ball and socket mount, just pop both ends off, discontect the wires, throw the solenoid away and no more problems. Will not affect any other part of the car.

My money would be on the lock-out cable being out of adjustment.
To adjust this, the console needs to come out...at the froward end of the shifter mechanism there is a black plastic adjuster thru which the lock-out cable passes. This adjuster has a black plastic lock part that needs to be lifted with a large flat-blade screw driver. When it is lifted, the cable can be moved back and forth. This is the adjustment for the lock-out portion for the shifter mechanism.
Should add that this is the method for A4's that I have seen up to 92..

You might be right on earlier models BUT the 94,95,96 have the brake interlock solenoid, other years do not have it. I am 100% sure it is the solenoid without even seeing the car. I am told GM added it so little kids could not get the car out of park.
