Prom / code / Crossfire ECM question
I'm trying to get a little info on this code and I was doing some research and read a diagram that said code 51 indicates Prom problems.
It said it could be a faulty prom or installed backwards. Is there a certain way this should go in? How often do Proms go bad?
Could a code 51 also indicate a bad ECM? Has this happened to anyone?
Thanks for any input or advice anyone could give me on this.
The reason why I was asking was I sold the ECM / Prom on ebay untested, but should have been good.
Trying to be a honest seller I offered a 3 day doa warranty.
The seller emailed me back and said that he installed it and was getting a code "51" and said it was a bad ECM.
I did a little research myself and found out that that code suggested that the first cause was a bad Prom and could have been installed backwards or damaged.
I emailed this suggestion to the seller and got this back as a reply
"I did and the same code came up. The C3 1982 Shop manual and a call to a gm dealer I know says that the code is either a prom error or a computer (ECM) problem. The prom in the car is a Hypertech performance chip. I was looking to replace it with factory style chip.. I will package and send the computer back today along with your chip. P.S. I put my computer and chip in the car and I got no codes"
I know in some situations people that have ECM computer problems like to "try" a replacement part to see if the original was the cause of the problem. I got a weird feeling that this could have been the case here at my expense. But have now way of testing this when I get it back so I have to take his word for it and and offer the refund.
