Month ago pulled the crank pulley/balancer forward to replace the opti, and reseated it no problem. New 'bargain' opti failed, so doing it all again. Now crank pulley moved about 1/4" and won't go any further.
Any comments welcome, advise solicited, and seems help needed.
Have at it, and thanks.

The lip on the hub that the balancer sits on isn't a 1/4". You're not pulling off the balancer and hub as an assembly are you?!
The balancer comes off separately...
and the hub (admittedly not a great pic) remains on the crank...
Considering you just had the thing apart, the balancer should slip right off assuming you have all three bolts removed.
