Default PS Pump ? HP?

OK guys - so it looks like my PS pump finally gave up the ghost this weekend. I was running corvette days over in Pahrump and the cabin started to fill with smoke (on the curvy part of the track - smoke went away on the straight part!) when I sytopped fluid coming from what looks to be the underside of the pump = got blown all over the lower engine compartment and blew onto the right brake and wheel setups.

So my question is - will doing autoX's and track days blow up stock or replacement Power steering pumps? If so - do I need to go to some sort of racing pump - bet thats big bucks for that!

Since a PS pump doesn't "know" what the car is doing...it only "knows" pump (engine) rpm...I'd say no, autox or track days will not damage a PS pump.
Overrevving might damage it.

Perhaps your 20-year old pump just finally gave up the ghost? Buy a stock replacement, put it on, and don't give it another thought.

Thanks Larry,
depends on what you mean by overrevving. I have a ZZ4 motor in the car - and I often rev it to about 5200 occassionally to about 56 or 5700. yahooooo!

I disagree, If you use the car for alot of autox or road racing your next pump will die as well. I went through 3 factory hp lines, 1 Gm pump, 2 reman pumps.
The lines all broke at the fitting where it seats into the pump, The pumps just started to whine even when cooled down.
To solve the line I bought a line kit from DRM. It makes the hp line into a braded one with stainless fittings ($100). I bought a new pump for $175 from Turn One. It's supose to be revalved to not run such a high pressure at high RPM use. I haven't installed it yet but check on the autox forum for referances. After reading them they are why I bought one. I'm tired or replacing pumps and lines!!

Based on the discussions that came up in this thread, power steering units become a problem especially on road racing with sustained high rpm...

Yup,
thats what I'm finding out. I'm going to call turn one right now and try to figure this out. it looks like they sell both new custom units - or they rework (revalve for lower volume/pressure) an old pump.
