The center console on my 95 LT1 coupe is startiung to pick up some fairly large scratches. Does anyone know what paint / finish is used on the console surface? If so can I purchase and apply it?
Thought I saw a post about this a while back but my search found nothing.
That's a very good write up, I am wondering how much all that stuff costs, but then again, it's way cheaper than buying these parts new.
One question, to get the orignal "black" color, what would you use for paint color? Duh-- I realize it's black, but....I know originally it wasn't the real shiny black, and I think it's shinier than flat black. Would you recommend clear coating it afterwards?
thanks.

I used the flexible bumper paint (spray cans) to do the console in my 85. The finish is just right and this stuff is very durable. I discovered this by accident on another car I used to have. I painted the black exterior trim with satin black. By mistake, I used the black bumper paint on one piece. It was a little shinier than the satin, but close. A year later, all of the trim was fading bad, except the piece painted with the bumper paint. It looked as good as new. Since then I've used this on a lot of black exterior trim parts.
Same results on my console. I figure if it can stand up on the outside, it will really last on the inside.

Hmm - will have to try this... I've been looking for a new shifter console for my 95 since I got it.... I can't justify $120+ for it and have considered painting it. This may do the trick Mine looks SO bad that it couldn't hurt.
Also keep in mind those new, "reproduction" pieces commonly available on ebay do not use the factory finish, what ever the heck it is. I have one and it seems to never completely cure. It has been slightly tacky since day 1 (and no, not "delightfully tacky"). The unfortunately side-effect of this is it attracts TONS of dust (entire interior is clean except for the console) and marks up easier than the stock piece. I should have contacted the vendor, but never bothered since I barely drive it anyway.
