Default New Vette Owner

Well I have a 94 Lt1 Vette. Have owned in a total of 2 weeks. I have a question about codes. I have read lot's about checking codes. How do you check them? Do I need to buy something.

Thanks
Jeff

Paper clips do make good scanners on digidash equipped C4s. Dunno about the "revised interior" styles. On a 96 and up, you DEFINATELY need an OBD2 scanner

What you need to buy is a factory service manual. You may or may not need it to pull codes, and others can help tell you what circuit the code originated from, but only the FSM has the trouble shooting charts to help you track down the CAUSE of the code. Just because a code comes from a given circuit, say the EGR, for example, doesn't necessarily mean that the EGR valve is defective. It just means that a reading was sent to the ECM that was out of the parameters for those particular conditions... on that circuit, cause, unknown. You don't want to be throwing money at a problem (guessing what is bad and replacing it, untested). Proper and methodical trouble shooting (detective work) will allow you to identify and test the culprit, before investing time and money in it's replacement.

RACE ON!!!

If you have a 16 pin diagnostic connecter, you can jump from the fourth pin in the top row to the fourth pin in the bottom row to get your codes. It will give you codes from the PCM, the CCM and the ABS/ASR module. You'll need a manual though, to interpret and diagnose them. Welcome to the forum!

Yeah I love driving it. Was going to use it for my daily vehicle but after I cleaned it I decided not to do this so went out and bought another car for this purpose. I also have a Harley and have found out the Vette community is like the Harley community. People love there Vettes, People love there Harleys.

Welcome aboard! I spent the $29 from MAD and bought one of their code readers. Much easier to use, and they provide a code manual with it. But, you must buy a Helms Manual!

and this link to tell you what the error codes mean:

if you have a 12 pin ALDL, short A & B:

if you have a 16 pin ALDL, short 4 & 12:

You're not one of those people who keep it locked up in the garage just to drive on those special days, are you? I would think in a place like Florida where the weather is nice you would be driving the Vette every day. Who else are you saving it for?

Thats a NEGATIVE
I have a 94 also, you do need something to read codes, and that IS a paperclip or simular item to join conectors 4 and 12. Read procedure below. You certainly dont need a scanner for any of them.

How to View Stored Diagnostic Codes on 1994 – 1996 Corvettes

You display codes on the digital LCD speedometer readout, by using a re-shaped paper clip to short ALDL pin 4 to pin 12.

1994 – 1996 Corvette ALDL connector:

You short pin "12" to pin "4" and turn the ignition switch to "On" without starting the engine.

The speedometer will display any codes using the same protocol as the 1990-1993 model but there are some changes in the designation for the modules plus additional modules are added:

Module "1" is still the CCM module.

Module "4" is now called the PCM module (Powertrain Control Module) because automatic transmission computer control was added to Engine Control Module in 1994.

Module 7 (on the 1996 model only) is the RTD module. (This is the Real Time Dampening module which replaced the Selective Ride Control module in 1996).

Module 9 is the ABS/ASR module number from 1994 through 1996.
Finally, Module "A", the DERM (Dynamic Energy Control Module --- (the air bag control module) will be requested to show any codes.

Just like the 1990-1993 display, you read the codes on the speedometer (big) and read the module number on the trip odometer (small).

A series of dashed lines for instance “ - - -“ indicates no more stored codes for that module.

A code showing as “C12” for the CCM module (module #1) means no codes are stored. So C12 is a good thing to see.

Again, you can cause the codes to repeat by turning the ignition off for five seconds and then back on.

Turn the ignition off and remove the short to restore normal operation.

To clear codes in the CCM proceed as follows:

1. With ignition "off" ground terminal #12 of the DLC (use bent paper clip to connect pin 4 to pin 12)

2. Turn ignition "on".

3. Press trip/odo button on the DIC until 1.7 appears in the trip
monitor area of the instrument cluster.

4. Press eng/met button on the DIC & hold until "---" appears in the
speedometer area of the cluster, this will clear CCM DTC'S.

To clear PCM/ECM codes do the following:

1. Press the trip reset button on the DIC until the desired system is displayed. In this case it will be 4.0.

2. Press trip/odo button on the DIC until the desired diagnostic mode(4.7) is displayed on the trip monitor area of the cluster.

3. Press & hold the eng/met button on the DIC until "---" is
displayed in the speedometer area of the cluster, this will clear PCM codes.

To clear ABS/ASR codes do the following:

Same as above but you’re looking for “9.7” on the trip odo

And here is the list of codes.

Welcome to the club (Forum). Buy a code reader for a OBD1 and buy a factory manual. www.helminc.com This combination will save you hundreds of dollars a year and will give you confidence to do more yourself. Good luck.

Factory manual: CERTAINLY.
Code reader: NEGATIVE.
Spend the money on something worth while, and a code reader is a VERY expensive paper clip, cause that is about all it does. If youre that way inclined, buy a cable to plug into a COM port on a computer and buy some software. But for christ sake, DONT waste your money on a bloody code reader when a paper clip is almost free!!
