My service abs light is on on my 90 vert. How do I get the code out to find out what is wrong with it? I think one of the wheel sensors might be bad but I am not sure.
From: Sacramento, CA Money can't buy happiness - but it's more comfortable to cry in a Corvette than a Yugo.
I believe that the 90 has the same early version ABS system as the 86-89, which unfortunately, I am very familiar with. If so, there is no ABS code available. ABS codes began with the 91 and later systems. Someone with specific experience on a 90 ABS system correct me if I'm wrong.
The wheel sensors on all 86-96 Vettes are essentially the same. If you suspect a wheel sensor, first try removing each sensor and cleaning it. There is only a single screw with a 10mm head holding each sensor in the wheel knuckle. Unscrew it and pull the sensor out. The sensor is heavily magnetized and attracts a lot of small road debris over time. Clean with a soft rag and WD-40, then reinstall using a thin film of anti-seize on the sides of the sensor. Should take a total of 5~10 minutes per sensor. A lot of times this is all it takes to resolve the problem.
The 90 was the first year for ABS with code retrieval from the Drivers Information Center (DIC).
If you have the factory service manual, there is an excellent description of how the ABS system works. Further, there is a Service Technology Group publication on the ABS system. Got mine off ebay. Or try Google, 90 Corvette ABS. You really want the factory service manual. Sell some furniture and get one.
Recommend you retrieve the code. You can use the paper clip method or get some fairly cheap products available from Gordon Killebrew, (C4 guru)that will allow you to pull the codes.
Once you pull the codes, cross reference the code with the service manual, you are on the way to repairing the system.
As a generic comment, I would read up on the system through the factory service manual, get a really good feel for how it works, the BITE/BIT checks, system components, and you should be able to keep this system working. If you code up a right front sensor, let me know. We 90 owners and later are fortunate in that we can pull codes. Find the code(s) and get back.
