Another stupid quiestion. Sorry if this has already been asked but does anyone know of the law that 96 and below cars dont have emissions test. Ive asked local shops and they say every car MUST have one. ??? So please someone point me in the right direction. Thanks
It has less to do with the year as it does whether or not the car uses OBD II. If it does, then an emissions test is done through the cars on-board computer, not with a sniffer.
Here in GA, cars older than 25yrs old dont even need emissions tests. So after that 25yr mark, do whatever you want.
So if I lived in GA and had an 80 Vette, I could legally gut the cats and tell the Feds about it?
Down here, they say if you had a cat from the factory, your car must have one no matter what and that you must not tamper with emissions controls, EVER!
Its funny they also don't have any visuals and/or sniffers down here in Polk County, FL...
86 but theres a really strange thing about it. On the passenger side the radiator hose on the bottom....i got one for the L98 and it was to short. So i got one for the Lt1 and it was perfect. But I dont believe its a Lt1 and i cant find the engine number. I mean the car has excellent pickup and i used the diagnostic piece you plug in to your ciggarette lighter. 330 Horsepower and 400 Ft of torque. Any ideas. Sorry to be such a bother to you guys. Im trying to keep this to a minimum

I guess so... we have alot of counties that dont even require emissions tests regardless of the year of your vehicle..

I love the south!
I heard they used to have emissions testing down here but the state couldn't make money off it so they stopped. HAHAHA, the Feds can take my old cat and eat it... pff... Even when I first traded up for my Vette, the precats and main cat were already gutted... So then I found out it was less expensive to weld a Dynomax bullet straight muffler in place of that cat.
Most modern cats flow quite well, and steal very little HP. If the car is street driven, leave 'em alone. The days when low emissions and high output couldn't co-exist are long gone. If you need to deal with emissions inspections, it simply isn't worth it to disable emissions control equipment (and we all gotta breathe the same air). There are far more effective -- and completely legal -- ways to increase your engine's output. Do it right, and keep it clean.
Emission testing requirements are set by the State...some States then leave it up to individual Counties to set their own...
Here in Florida it is by County...I used to live in Palm Beach County and they required testng...now I'm in Volusia County and there is no testing at all...
Some States that test do allow exemption from testing by age of car...I don't have a list but that may be tied to when the Feds started requiring cats on cars... Federal law on cats is separate from the State emmision testing laws and cannot be superceded...
