my 383 runs on 92 octane at about 10.4 to 1 compr. getting the chip right will be your biggest problem. i have a chip from fastchip and pcmforless and i am trying to get the one from pcmforless more hp i just have to get it on the dyno. i love the 383 it makes it a totally different car

I have been running a 383 for about 10 years. First one had about 10.4 to 1 compression, second one has 10.7 to 1 compression. Because it is maf, it has tolerated the stock programming quite well. 383 is such a common upgrade because it works very well. Best thing I have done. Build it and drive it hard.

If you have not done so already, definitely familiarize yourself with the basics of scanning and data logging, and what all the values mean. Learn all about the electronics of your fuel injection system, sensor feedback, the ECM, etc. If I could do it all over again, I would have definitely learned ALL about these items on my stock engine BEFORE installing my 383.

Depending on the extent of your build, you will likely need a custom tune. If you do not plan on tuning yourself, I strongly recommend talking to your tuner before you put your combination together. Some combinations work much better than others, and a good tuner will get you going in the right direction.
