Because they were cracking in testing.

Its alot easier with the drivers seat out because you must get under the dash and remove 4 bolts from underneath the steering column and remove two on the outside. Everything must be in place or you will not have good brakes

I don't know about why plastic or metal - I know most replace the plastic with a metal unit - longevity - some say resists heat better - the heat certainly over time makes the plastic more brittle.

removing the seat gives you lots of room to get in there and move around - with the seat in place you have to bend 3 or 4 directions just to get your arm in close proxcimity to the nuts - but with the seat gone - you just reach in!

Carl, the heat resistant trick I did was to keep the heat off of the plastic, which does get brittle from too much heat, and the header tube is right near it.

Default brake booster

Just changed mine in a 84. it's not a bad job,it helps if your 100lbs and 5'5". Don't forget the gasketbetween the fire wall and booster. I don't know what the hell it does, since the booster is self contained, but it's there.the saftey clip is tricky, get the snap on one,a cotter key is too hard to do with one hand. Good luck.........

If getting a metal one, I'd suggest spraying it with a few coats of Rustoleum before installing it. They tend to rust and turn ugly with time.

Are the metal ones a GM unit or aftermarket? Any p/n's would be helpful.

Yea, but do they give you anything for your back after the 5th or 6th time you have changed the part?

When some one comes in to my shop and says "but i can get that at autozone, advance, pepboys, nationwide"
i tell them to go ahead and get it, but they can install and WARRANTY it them self.

To answer your question, most of it is of low quality, some things, like brake parts are just to important to try and save money on.

Wow - that was a real "contortionist mombo!" Especially for someone who's 6' and not on the skinny side.

The dam backing plate inside the firewall moved a little and made it almost impossible to get the thing back in. Thankfully, my wife gave me a hand.

I couldn't seem to get the traction controll module out of the way, so I opened the hydraulics and moved the master cylinder out of the way. At this point I just need to bleed the brakes.

You dam cry babies, I"m going to be 70 in a few months & I replaced the booster in our 91 twice in the past year. The heater core also. It ain"t plug & play.
Leave your i-pod on the kitchen table, disconnect your cell phone from your ear ,remove your wallet with 30 credit cards from your back pocket then show your skinny wife which bolts to twist.
