I know this has been covered before, but I never really payed attention to it then. But I pulled my 86 out and drove it yesterdady. That is the good news. I just had back surgery two weeks ago so getting in and out is still tough. I have to pull on the steering wheel a little to get out. When I did, I noticed that it wobbled and was loose. The entire steering wheel column. It really moves around a bunch. I remember there being a bearing or something in there. But much beyond that and I am foggy. How do you fix it, any ideas?
I was in the same boat as you, coming out of Pancreatitus surgery. Getting in and out was a big deal, using the steering wheel as a crutch. I took my car to Tony's Corvette in Gaithersburg, MD. He said my steering wheel was unsafe. They first had to disconnect the airbag by pulling the fuse and the battery. Then dropped the rug and plastic/metal plate that is above your knees. It is easy wiht just a few bolts, and an electric connection to the courtesy light and the ADL connector. They then removed the whole steering wheel and had to rebuild it. There are plastic bushings internal to the steering column that need to be replaced. Tony told me the reason it went bad was because I was probably using it to get in and out of the car, and that damages the bushings quickly. It cost alot to have it done right at the shop.
Those evil screws! Do a search for loose steering column in the archives... Here are a couple of threads I started related to the loose column in my 85.
Thanks for the help. I have turned every wrench that has ever gone into this car. But I am a ways away from being fit for duty right now. $300 fix is a bit of a shock, but I may just pay to have it done.
Thanks for the link, it looks great. It has been a while, hope all is well in your neck of the woods. I never did put in that D36 I bought from you. I opted for re-gearing mine instead. Great link, do you want to come up here and freeze you AXX off and help me fix it?

It just snowed here night before last and has been in the 30s during the day. It's probably t-shirt weather for you if you came here. Good to hear from you. Hope all is well. Good luck on the column. BTW, instead of using a pin puller for the tilt, I was able to use a screw with the correct thread mounted in a body sliding hammmer. I used the hammer to pull the pins, they're just held in the holes via friction and tight tolerance.
