Default 1996 LT4 No Crank

With no prior symptoms today the car would not crank.

Battery Voltage is > 12 volts - lights are bright

Security system behaves normal as far as the passive entry as well as when using the door key

When I turn the key the dash lights change as they normally would when cranking but absolutely nothing happens. Starter does not turn nor does the solenoid even click. Voltage stays unchanged.

All fuses in all three panels are intact. Key is clean, battery cables are clean and tight.

Tried roll starting the car and it will not catch.

I only had my daily use key to try but will try my spare key tomorrow morning.

Have others experienced this and if so what was the remedy? I very much appreciate any assistance.

Mark

Try another kignition key if you have one, sometimes the little chip in the key wears out, wait about 30min after you have tried the other key for it to reset, then try a spare key. IF you don't have another key, you can have you old one tested/replaced at the dealer and some key shops have the machine to see what key you have to get another made. Happened to mine, rolling start won't work, modern cars have the safety switch so you can't pop start with the clutch.

If that does not work look at your fusable links behind the battery.

Yes...occasionally (3 times in 10 years).....wait 15 minutes and try again.....be sure key is clean & dry.....

Note if you keep trying before the system times out it will NEVER start, so be sure to wait between trys...

No crank? I would check the connections on the battery. I have had this happen where the battery will pass 12 volts, but no current.

Problem was a wire to the "reader" for the key. Put a 9500 ohm resistor in place of the plug leading up the steering column and it started up great. Not sure if I will leave it that way or replace the switch assembly.

Good the hear
My car also had a weird "no start" occurrence a couple of months ago. I waited a half-hour and then it started up great...and hasn't given me any problems since

Like I said...3 times in 10 years for me.......but you have to wait til it times out and resets or any try will extend the lockout time......I am still using the original keys.....this has been reported my others, so somewhat common...

I think the actual reset time is something like 7 minutes.....but 15 minutes will work for sure

Don't permanently bypass VATS, 99% of thefts are done by bashing the column and jumping the ignition. The person I bought my 87 from bought a new 90 and one day they came out of work and found the drivers glass broken out and the column bashed, but the car hadn't moved an inch. Keep you car in good repair!
