I have an 87 where the tachometer won't display its bottom half. The LCD glass is not broken, the contacts looked good and I cleaned the glass, the erasers and board connector contacts according to Batee's guide.
What else is there? I don't want to have to pay someone to fix this for me. Is there any way to buy parts for this dash or no?
Are you sure it is not displaying? Are all the backlight bulbs working?
The pink eraser looking things are actually like a bunch of wires lined up side by side. I have about 5 of them in my desk drawer beside me. It looks like the rubber starts to atrophy as they age. Maybe they are not making contact any more.
I would swap the pink conductors, one to another position, put it all back together and then you will know if it is the pink conductor that has stopped conducting. If you still have the same condition after the swap, then 99% sure it is the LCD glass.
LCD panes are available on ebay. The service centers that repair clusters do not sell parts and many of the electronic components are standard IC's and such and can be purchased at electronic supply houses.

According to Gordon Killebrew, alot of tach problems can be attributed
to water entering the bulkhead connecter by your sterring column in the engine bay-seems the General never sealed the top and sides of the connector-and rain or because the cowling drain tube causes water to enter the connector-easy to disconnect-you're looking for a greenish/white residue mixed with the black looking grease (the anti corrosion stuff the general put in) the tach pin is in the lower row of the bulk head connection-if you find water has entered-he says just blow it out and seal the top and sides-also if the tube appears to be directed toward the connector-redirect it away. Leave the black stuff in there.Hope this helps.
I have experienced the 'missing elements' symptoms described above, and when I swap the position of the erasers, the missing elements move to another part of the display.
Now that I know what part is causing trouble, where do I obtain a replacement? Any assistance would be most appreciated!
