My air is not working and I think it's the compressor making a racket. When I remove the belt the noise stops so not internal (engine), but hard to tell if it's from the compressor or something else, but since the air is not working I think it's reasonable to believe it's the compressor. The question I have is when I remove the belt, the compressor pully moves very freely and does not make any noise. If I don't have any heater or air cond controls turned on shouldn't the ac free wheel and not turn the compressor? If that's the case I can't understand why I have the noise. Any thoughts?
Yes it will free wheel. The unit has an electric clutch in it, maybe it is bad? Do you see oil / wet stains around the front of the compreesor, near the pulley? Sometimes when they go bad they leak from the front seals? If you disconnect the wires / connector going to the compressor does it still make the noise?
Thanks for the response, Yes I remember the oily flim on the inside of the hood, but thought it was from the ac oil when I lost my ac. When I get home today I will disconnect the connector and see if I still have the noise.
