I attempted a job today to replace my waterpump after my stewart waterpump arrived. I wanted to loosen the pulley on the pump itself before I loosened the belt and started removing other things. The bolts on the pump will not come loose and instead it spins the pump pulley. How do I go about loosening this pulley?
Increase the tension on the belt, and/or use pressure on the bolt heads in a direction that doesn't directly promote pulley rotation. Also a sharp rap in the end of the wrench, will provide an instant impact that may get things started. A strap wrench on the pulley, in place of the belt may be easier to maneuver.
I agree w/CFI a strap wrench is good , another method is to use a big screwdriver, place the blade of driver across 2 bolts (horizontally) and hold w/one hand and pushing in opposite direction of loosening a bolt above the the driver. Loosen all first without entirely removing so that this can be done in all 4 positions. Hope this makes sense
The suggestions you've already received will solve the problem.
But if anyone ever finds yourself facing a similar problem in close quarters,
KD Tools, Lisle and probably others make fan/fan clutch tools to make
the job easier.
I bought a "KD 3471 Pulley Holder / Fan Clutch Tool" for a job a few years
ago.
This one is a universal-fit. Works well for me. There are others out
there for specific needs.

Thanks for the info.. I was able to get it off with a long screwdriver and socket wrench.
