what is its purpose??? i know 96-97 are the only years they had them but they are also sequential injection and obd2. my car is throwing a code for the crank angle sensor even though it is a new delco unit. i need a tune for my new cam anyway and was wondering if you can have it removed in the tune so i wouldn't have to worry about it??? anyone? what would be the bennifit of a obd1 conversion too?
I don't know on the '97, but on the '96 its sole purpose is related to emissions & OBD II. The PCM uses the input from the sensor to determine if the engine is misfiring.
It can be tuned out completely, or you can set the misfire parameters such that you'll still be able to use the misfire diagnostics. For instance, when I had the LT4 HOT Cam, I set the lower end of the misfire detection range to 1200rpm. That way, there was no SES light at idle yet the diagnostic was available if needed.
