Default Help! - Valve Train Question

I'm currently adjusting my valves: Roller Hyd. Lifters / Roller Stainless steel Rockers; and noticed one of the locking allen set screws sits LOWER than the others. After adjusting shouldn't they all be more or less the same height with respect to the retainer nut? Do I have a collapsed lifter?

Default valve adjustment

That's why when I build engines I set everything up a little loose, by feel. Then fire the engine up and adjust.

I've had guys install engines I built, then drive over with everything clacking. I adjust the valves and they're good to go.

Repair manuals suck! You have to do it how they did it in the 50's and 60's if you want it right. That's old school.

And I'm a '72 model.

I agree...repair manuals can suck, as can opinions like ..DO soak lifters in oil, DON'T soak 'em, adjust until you can't move the push UP and DOWN, others say until you can't TURN it, then go an extra 1/4, turn or 1/2 turn or 3/4 turn or FULL turn ...
I am starting to like the sound of old school methods. Talking of that, when you run the motor and re-adjust, how much do you turn the adjuster after clicking has stopped....none, 1/4...1/2..? And, do you you use the same amount of adjustment for roller tappetts as you do for the stock pressed ones...?
TIA
