I finished the brake booster install this weekend. The new one doesn't leak or hiss, but the brake pedal is significantly lower. The brake lights were on all the time because the pedal didn't come up high enough to turn the switch off.
So, I adjusted the switch.
But now the brake pedal is a good TWO inches below the clutch. I can't pull the pedal up by force to meet the clutch. They were almost parallel in height prior to this.
Suggestions?
1. Is this the wrong booster from Autozone? P/N: 54-71405
2. Can I adjust the rod that goes into the master cylinder to change this?
If you unbolt the Master Cylinder you will see the tip of the pushrod on the booster. That tip can be screwed out (towards the M/C). Be careful not to wind it out too far or you may cause brake drag or some other internal M/C problems.
Be really carefull in adjusting the rod - a few turns is probably to much - and will result in internal damage to the new Booster - fluid leaking inside and failure!
Do a search here and in C-4 - you should find several threads discussing this!
Some of them are non-adjustable. Make sure that if you had a spacer for the firewall that you put it back in on the new one. There usually is no reason to adjust the brake light switch so the pedal will make contact. I suspect that there is a spacer issue. Also, I recently changed mine and WOW is the metal booster the way to go!!!
I'm a mechanical doofus, but mine took a dump and I am going to try to tackle this one myself. I found a place where a new GM unit only costs about $30 more than an Autozone one. There have been a few posts lately concerning this.
