Default Hooker Header 2149

I was on the Summit web site cheking out a set of Hooker headers PN 2149. Is the rear port on the right header for an EGR valve? I wanted to run a miniram, I need to run an EGR valve due to emission testing.

Thanks
Gary

the miniram has no egr provision and the 2149 do have the air tubes for the smog pump.

I agree. Also, I believe the hooker has 1 5/8 in primaries. TPIS headera have 1 3/4 in primaries. Acording to TPIS the 1 5/8 give a wider power band for road track cars, and the 1 3/4 give more power at high RPM's for drag racing. I replaced the mini ram (smog needed) with an accel super ram on my stock 86 auto with no ECM tunning, and picked up 5 mph in 1/4 mi. The super ram will benifit a TPI motor, but will give more to the lower RPM, and decrease high Rpm power in a LT1/LT4 unless you install a bigger cam & heads to pump up the high RPM power. If you have a TPI 85-91, go with the super ram, about $1200 new on ebay. TPIS headers are more expensive than hookers. Hope this is helpfull

Correction: Hooker headers have 1 3/4" primary tubes (too big for most people, in my opinion). The Hooker 2149s have the connection for the EGR tube. Inspect it closely before you install the headers, because rumor has it that the hole for the EGR tube isn't drilled through the primary tube, at the factory. If you plan to use the EGR you will have to drill it yourself, and I'll bet it's easier before you get them installed.

RACE ON!!!

when i bought my 2149's from summitracing, they did have the hole for the egr drilled, from the factory.

i'm one of those examples where its borderline, regarding 1 5/8" or 1 3'4".....and therefore should have opted for 1 5/8"

On my 2149's no hole was drilled for the EGR, and no provision on the mini-ram. I'm not even going to start with primary size, the 2149 is 1/3/4''

OOPS, I stand corrected. A year ago when I wes looking for headers, according to TPIS, the hookers were 1 5/8. I dont know which is best, but I went with TPIS's 1 3/4 in headeds. I felt, reguardless of primary size, the TPIS was a better product.

To stay smog legal you cant use a mini ram in states that require EGR. Your choices are accel super ram, a modified LT4 manifold, or one of the after market base manifold with modified runners, and maybe others I don't know about. I have a super ram, Ca legal, and like it. I picked up 5 mph in 1/4 mi, and more low end tork. My engine will rev to 5000 RPM instead of 4400, and with custom programming, may do better.Accel super ram about $1250 on ebay, & some times you can find used ones cheaper. Good luck with your modification

Every set of 2149s I've installed I had to drill the hole for EGR myself. (done 5 in the last 2 years).

Long time ago, I saw a conversion kit for an external EGR (not bolted to intake mainfold). I don't remember who made it, but I seem to remember that it was one of the bigger companies like Mr Gasket or Edlebrock. Accordingly, I belive that it is possible to use an EGR with the miniram.
