Default Several Repair Questions....

Hey All got a couple quick questions for ya:

1. How would I improve idle? Make it a little less lumpy, also it occasionally stalls out when idling if I don't rev it up and get it going, has done it on occasion in reverse also.

2. Any idea what a squealing / squeaky sound coming from passengers side engine compartment might be?

3. Are underdrive pulleys worthwhile doing?

4. Changing the serpentine belt, any special tools needed?

5. If ya change out all the fluids on the car, other then oil which has already been done, like brake, PS, etc... what ya do with the old fluids? Where do you take it?

6. Is the AIR pump eliminator kits worthwhile doing?

7. How would I adjust my windshield wipers? The drivers side one when set to full blast goes a little too far and goes off the windshield, the passengers side one during intermitent doesn't go all the way back down it sorta stops a few inches above that.

Thanks,
Bob

If you have adjustable Rockers you can try setting the lash 1/2 turn tighter or so - don't go more than a full turn past zero lash though.
You can try cleaning out the idle air circuit passages, and checking around your intake/runners/tb for vacuum leaks.
You can also try increasing your base timing a bit and see if that helps.

2. Any idea what a squealing / squeaky sound coming from passengers side engine compartment might be?

Any poly bushings in your suspension up there? I would lubricate all the fittings with some grease and replace the belt - see if that helps. look for loose accesory pullies also.

3. Are underdrive pulleys worthwhile doing?

The definitley help with freeing up power, but if you have any cooling/charging problems they would not be a good idea. I would at a minimum get a crank/alternator matched set so you alternator still makes stock power.

4. Changing the serpentine belt, any special tools needed?

Ratchet and socket, don't remember the size on the L98. It's 1/2 on
my LT1.

Buy one of the large oil drain pans from autozone and fill that up, then take it to autozone. They should accept it and recycle it for you (no charge)

Thanks for the quick reply, on the idling, my car's engine is a nearly bone stock L-98, has
-> TPI Air Foil (lame but got it)
-> K&N Air Filter & Open Air Lid (didn't notice much change, oh well)
-> No Cats - Kentucky boys jacked up the exhuast hard, it's free flowing... and almost falling off, soon to be replaced once I come up with a way to pass emissions (dang enviromentalists!!!!!!!)

-> Just bought a 160 degree thermo and a powermaster thermochip (got it for $40 off ebay new in box), is that thermo a bitch to install? Sounds like it, not doing it till I get the chip in -- I like doing mods in batches.

On the fluids where should I buy them all at? Same with what should I grease the wheel bearings with and where do I get it?

Sorry for stupid questions but this is my first car I'm working on, I've got a 2000 Cougar as my daily beater. I'm doing okay at this so far, did my own alternator the other day, I assumed all I needed was to do the belt tensioner like I did for the alternator but thought I'd double check first ;P

1. Try cleaning the injectors, also replace the fuel filter.

2. Might be the blower fan

3. No

4. Basically all you nee is a 1/2" drive rachet

5. Some Automotive shops, gas stations have recycling centers or places for fluids. You can also contact your local town government or sanitation company for locations. They are usually free.

6. No

I currently recycle all my fluids. As has been said most parts stores, I use O'Reillys will take the oil/tranny/PS/Rear axle lube mixed. All have said DO NOT mix brake fluid with them. Mucks up the whole container they say, so I don't. Ft. Worth has a very comprehensive Home hazmat recycling setup, but alas, I don't live in the city anymore, so am still trying to figure out what to do with the brake fluid and antifreeze. As far as grease for your wheel bearings, forget it, they are sealed and if they are loose, have to be replaced. Good Luck :seeya
