this question was raised a little while ago. the most logical opinion was that the sealant was to stop water intrusion into the bolt cavity and rusting the bolt. i believe it became clear that normal rtv would be adequate. but i have to agree with the liquid nails post. when i broke my beam loose-117k miles-to put in a new tranny, the crap that was on there most closely resembled liquid nails and held like it too. the stuff probably had a two-fold mission: seal the hole and prevent movement. that being said, proper torquing and rtv on the top has covered both issues for me as far as i can tell. if i had to do it again and was sure i wouldn't have to pull it off again anytime soon, i would probably go the liquid nails route.
do a search.

Also, you don't want corrosion starting between C beam and trans or diff. If you live where they salt the roads in winter this may be an issue.
Its easy but messy to do. I usually use grey silicone (seems easier to clean up), and I don't even live where they salt the roads.
I believe the official GM sealant you get from the dealer is just a tube of windshield adhesive. But seems like anything works fine, or just nothing at all. I used the windshield adhesive, but just because I'm paranoid.
I would think that urethane windshield sealant or liquid nails would be very difficult to take apart in the future. If the purpose of the sealant is for corrosion I think I will go with silicone. Thanks guys
