I have the trans on the floor ready to go to the shop. The rear main is definetly weeping and right now the rear of the engine is being held up by a jack under the pan. It looks like the seal should come out the back without disturbing the pan.
Yes you can change the seal only without dropping the pan. Pry it out with a little screwdriver where the indentations are. If you change the seal retainer gasket you must remove the pan or at least lower it a half inch or so.
Well it looks like I'll be dropping the pan to replace both the main and inner gasket. I'll have to come up with a way to support the rear of the motor. Thanks

You could probably get a 2x4, and screw in some wood blocks to both ends of it so it cradles the crank and supports the block by where the pan would bolt up. It doesn't take much to hold it up when the tranny is off.
