Default Door repair questions ???

I am replacing the door panels on my 85 coupe and have a couple of questions.

1) When I removed the old door panel, there is something like a bead of caulk that goes around the metal under the door panel. Is this there to help keep the panel tight against the frame? And if so should I remove it and replace it with fresh or can you just use what is there, and if not should I just remove it all?

2) While I have the door apart, I cleaned up the mechanism (plastic strip with teeth and the rail it slides on) that runs the window up and down. Now I'm assuming it probably should be re-lubricated, but what should it be lubricated with? I don't want to use something that is going to attract dirt and grime to collect and gum it all up again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mike

On my 86' the "caulk was there to hold onto the clear plastic sheet that was behind the door skin.

I used white lithium grease to lubricate the window track and door lock linkage.

I guess someone must have removed the plastic at some time and didn't replace it. I was planning on putting some new plastic in anyway, so I guess that is where it should stick down.

How is the white lithium grease working? Does it stay soft or will it gum up and start sticking again?

Thanks for the info.

Mike.

While you are doing this, if money isn't an obsticle, I would seriously consider upgrading to the '86 and above window regulators. The are much faster (who doesn't want faster operating windows?) and beefier.

There is an article in the archives of corvettemagazine.com describing the procedure. I'm not certain if it involves a new motor or not, but it certainly requires the purchase of the newer style regulator. I got mine off of ebay for $50 for the passenger side a couple of years ago and have yet to do the project. Waiting for the entire interior overhaul that I'll do in a few years. Since the driver's side was already done, I hardly notice that the passenger one is about 1/3 the speed. I am, however, very glad that the driver's is the faster of the two.

If you can't find the article, email me at steve@vsftransportation.com and I'll see if I can find the address for that article.
