Probably not what you thought, but I thought I would share some pictures of my blown "literally" motor. I was at the local drag strip shooting Nitrous as usual and hit the end of the track and had a lot of smoke coming out the back. I originally thought it was just a blown head gasket, but it turned out that I popped 3 pistons, 2 on the passengers side and one on the drivers side. Still trying to figure out how it did it, but I know why it did it. By looking at the plugs, the motor went WAY lean and melted the plugs and fused the pistons. I have peices of melted metal all in the exhaust ports of my heads, and in the combustion chambers. The pressure safety switch was set at 35psi so it should have cut out, but somehow it did not.
These were Forged J&E Pistons, I plan to go with J&E again, but get the ones with the lower ring land for Nitrous.
Not looking for any sympathy, just sharing my pictures, if you play you eventually pay. Already planning a wicked rebuild that I am expecting to put out quite a bit more horsies than before. And yes, the Nitrous is staying on...but I am putting even more safety measures on (new fuel delivery).
E gads!! I was just getting all happy ready to take the plunge(N20). UGLY pics!! I hate seeing stuff like that. Reminds me of when My Mustang's Vortech sucked in a hose clamp(don't ask). I'd never seen this 383 apart. I don't hope to either.
Depends how these heads flow on a bench after I clean them back up and do a valve job on them. I already have a pretty good solid roller cam in hand and all ready to go into the block. I hope to be able to .040 or maybe even .060 the block to clean it up. I want to do .060 honestly for the more cubes. With my 3.88" crank, it would put me at 402 CID. I am hoping for about 460-470 to the rear on motor.
Now I have the motor out of the car I am calling the engine builder tomorrow or Tuesday and maybe drop the short block off next weekend and hope to get it back in 4-6 weeks.
Man that looks pretty ugly. I'd check that pressure safety switch and the rest of the nitrous fuel circuit. You didn't hit the rev limiter did you ? I'd like to hear more about this new motor too. Good Luck with the new motor.
:hat
Looking for sympathy or not you have mine! It's one thing to have a stock motor go, but a built one is a shame. Like your attitude though, build it back with a vengence! And of course I love the solid roller idea! If you end up needing one (spring pressure) we have a stud girdle / valve cover combo for LT'1. Chris would probably trade you for your license plate ;).
If you go 0.060" over, just make sure you get the block sonic checked - it seems to be about 50/50 on the blocks I have seen if they will handle it or not - and a bore relocation is a bigger pita than it is worth!
Anyway, sorry, you probably already have all that covered - good luck with the new motor, and especially with the solid roller conversion!
I knew it was bad but :cry Hopefully you're engine guy will be faster than mine was. Let me know when you get it back and I'll help you put it together. Also 7K rpm's, a .060 overbore, and nitrous???

Feet? Where we are going...we don't need feet. :blueangel:
(Back to the Future...get it? ;))
That's even funnier when you pay attention to the dates on the pics ;).
Good luck with your project. Let me know if I can help with anything. I did run accross a couple LT1 short blocks at the dealership. Forgot to call you but seeing this reminded me. If I can remember, I'll give you a yell Monday. -Jeff
