I have a TPIS BM lower, ported plenum and edelbrock runners. I'm adding a Carroll blower system, and was wondering if it would be better to stay with the stock intake.
Some one posted recently that a L98 with blower & accel super ram intake produced too much low end tork to be practicle. Your set up should produce more low end tork than the super ram. A friend has a 434 cu in L98 with super ram, & makes the same complaint & plans on a TPIS mini ram (similar to LT1/LT4 intake) I have heard of using a modified LT1 manifolde on L98, & there is a web site about this. Hopefully, others with experience will post about this.

Dont laugh untill you have tried it. I didn't say "too much tork" I said two others with experience with plenum & long runners complained "too much tork" , "cant put on big enough tires to hook up". What is your experience?

I recently posted on here that with my motor and the large blower with the SR, the combo made too much torque. Following that conclusion, I switched to a MRII, but found that it did not make much difference, though I picked up some RWHP on the top.
I do believe that there is such thing as too much torque. I have run 147+MPH on the far end of the 1/4 mile, with a 2.7 sec '60' (11.0 time) on slicks. These are nasty times, and I needed to do something about that (though people think smoke down the track is cool). I modified the suspension, moved to the MR, played with the cam advance, then messed with the tuning. My 60' are better (in the 1.55 - 1.85 sec) depending on tires and track conditiond. But unfortunately, I can not assess much of that from the switch from the SR to the MRII.
Keep in mind, this is for a large motor with a big blower.
Well....I already have a hell of a time breakin' em loose now with the factory size rims and tires and only minor mods so far. I bought some ZR1 size rims and tires, more for coolness than any possible chance of helping me hook this thing up.
My cam choice increases low end torque as well (in part to help offset the large parasitic drag of the older blower while cruising around town, I'll post specs when I can find them) and maxes out at around 5200rpm, about where I figure things will start to go bad with the runner setup and the older SN60 blower.
I've resigned myself to most likely sticking with the 2.59 ratio in the rear (anything more and, given the amount of rain we have down here, it might get down right scary {not that I ever drive it in the rain} so I guess I need to sell these 3.56's, huh?) and probably a 2500-3000 stall. The motor, outside of new springs and increased rocker ratio and cam, will be all stock, save for the intake swap and long-tube headers.

My 86 with super ram & 1.6:1 rollers, otherwise stock, will rev to about 5200 RPM as well. I had a mini ram & same RPM's. Was 4400 before the manifold change. TPIS, maker of the mini ram, claims 6500 RPm "pulling strong all the way" with their custom tune. Accel says no tune needed with their super ram. My question is, will our modified L98's rev to 6500 RPM, pulling all the way, with a custom tune, or is TPIS passing gas? Does your motor max out at 5200 RPM due to characteristics of your motor, or is it tunning? Anyone have experience on this?
The SR seems to perform well to 5600 - 5800, while the MRII seems to be fine to 6000 - 6200. With FI, the MRII has no issue with 6600 (RWHP continued to climb).
There must have been something wrong in your combo if the MRII would not pull past 5200. Was this still the stock cam?

They both would rev past 5200, but would go slower. The mini ram would pop & sputter like it was lean. The SR will keep reving higher, but slower & sounds strained & slower speed at the end of my approximate 1/4 mi. test strip. Yes, stock cam. I also found that it runs better & more low end tork with the stock throttle body compared to a 58mm TB with the SR. Only used 58mm with MR. Also with stock prom on both. Is it the tunning, or something else? Am I getting what you would expect, or should it pull strongly to 5600-5800 RPM? Same question for the thred starter "silver 86"?

TPI, are you the guy that had issues with a '96 and a blower? And now you are having issues with mod parts on an '86? I might be throwing the match about now.
I haven't thrashed this 86 out yet (only put 400 miles on it so far), but I will answer with what I saw on a previous 85 that I built. I actually pulled a motor from a 1990 Greenwood that had been bored .030, with fully ported heads with 2.02/1.6, ported factory lower intake, large runners, ported plenum and 52mm TB. I also ran LT stainless headers, gutted cat, and borla's, but never got the chance to change the diff from the 2.56's. I installed a custom grind Crane cam (I'll see if I can find the spec card), 1.5 RR, decked the heads .020 and stuffed it all into my 85 without changing the tune (I know, right?!).
If I remember correctly, my shift points at the strip were between 5700-5800 and ran 13.09@109 with a 2.02/60, a bad valve body locking me out of first gear (at least I didn't have to worry about tirespin) and on GS-C's. Maximum power seemed to hit in the low 5000 range and didn't drop until the high 5700's, but incredible torque throughout the rpm range. Sorry this is kinda vague, but this was 10 years ago. The main point is that I was seeing hefty power still in the mid to upper 5000 rpm's. Mid 4000 power peeks would send me looking for fuel pressure problems, clogged exhaust (if the cat was still on), or spark issues.
On the clogged exhaust note, I had a 93 Formula with these mods: headers, 3.73's, CAI, chip (speed density), Borla tunable exhaust, and pulley...I was still only pulling 13.9's@98 on streets. I took the car back to the header installer, and we found the cat had basically melted. We gutted and promptly went to 13.4's@103 still on the streets.

Yes, but the 86 runs much stronger with the super ram, 5 mph faster in 1/4 mi. I will get a custom tune after I put on my new headers. The 96 LT4 is a longer story explained in other posts. Currently I am awaiting delivery of a 383 short block which I will run NA untill I can get the parts and info to run without an FMU. See my other posts for why.
