I have a 1992 LT1 and was wondering the best way to bleed the Power steering system. I disassembled the system and and drained the entire system, so there is no fluids in the system. What is the best way to bleed and circulate the fluids. I am worried if I start the engine with no fluid in the pump it will fail or if I turn the wheels without fluid in the rack it will fail. Any tips or tricks?
I heard once the best way to fully flush the system would be to disconnect the line coming from the rack and pinion that would go back up into the pump, and aim it toward a can. Jack the car up and keep turning the wheel back and forth, watching the old fluid come out. At the same time, watch the resevoir and add fluid. Once the clear new fluid is coming of the line from the rack and pinion, hook everything back up. This should give the whole system new fluid.
I need to do this also, just time is something I wish I had more of.
That's exactly what I do on mine:
1) Remove the return line from the resevoir (plug the hole in the res) and put the end in a bottle, drain out the old fluid.
2) continuously turn the steering wheel lock to lock
3) when the res empties, keep it full of new fluid
4) When fluid comes out clean, you're done
5) reconnect the line
Problem is you need at least two people to do this.
