Ever since a left turn, whenever I start out the left rear wheel starts with a squeeking (eek, eek, eek) that only goes away as you go faster. Could this be a wheel bearing, u-joint what? It's only on the left side. The car is an '89 L98 Coupe. Definitely a rotating, wheel-related sound. Does not sound like brakes(but could be?) almost sounds like a small"sawing" sound.
Any thoughts? Thanks
like the guy above me said coul dbe many but sounds just like the rear wheel bearing i just exploded! lol get the car on a lift or jack it up.. and push the tire back and forth.. if it moves easily... its the bearing/hub... if so... get a Hub assembly from TLDcorvettes.. got mine for like $115/Shipped and its a breeze to put on!
Mine also. It came apart after it had done it awhile. Luckily it was at low speed when it broke. The day before we were on an outing and topped out at 114 MPH. Scary thinking about what it would have done at that speed. Robert
The rear brakes were replaced last year, it doesn't actually sound like a brake squeal(but I'll check them anyway.) It actually has a "sawing" type sound that increases as you go faster from a stop, and then can't be heard after you've developed speed.
Thanks
Looks like it is time to get dirty, If the wheel bearing is loose, it will wobble when you jack up the car and wiggle it at 12:00 and 6:00. If it is loose, check the 36 mm nut in the center of the brake rotor. It should be 175 ft lbs.
My time to solve this problem won't be 'til Sat. I haven't even been able to check the manual, yet. Just for point of reference, is there anything special involved in C4 u-joint or wheel bearing replacement?
Can I pick up either at an auto parts store, or is this Chevy parts dept. ????
Thanks
My car is doing the same thing. A pickup truck I use for work also had the EXACT same noise as what my car has and it was a bad u-joint. Your description of the noise sounds like we must have an identical problem. So, my vote is bad u-joint.
Here is Scorp's detailed description of how to go about replacing these:
Thanks all!
I pulled the halfshaft out and the cap and bearings fell right out. Thanks for all your sound advice. Special thanks to Scorp for that detailed article.
In the end, it really wasn't much of a job...I did all 4 u-joints.
