This '87 is my fourth Vette. Has been 25 years since last one and feel like a jerk asking this. I have manuals -- two of them. Something always needs to be disconnected when setting the timeing. Before it was just a vacuum tube now it is "the brown wire."
Found the wire but, for the life of me, can not find where it can be disconnected. It appears to be part of a mass of wires going behind the distributor.
Tempted to cut it and put in a switch but that computer scares me.

Do not cut.
I guess that it is the same at my 84 Vette. At the drivers side above the brake servo attached at top side of the firewall you find a small square flat-top box. It is the map sensor. There is a connector and a vacuum tube connected to it. Close to that box there is a single brown wire with a connector hanging in the wire. That is the one you have to disconnect to set the timing.
Between the lower part of the wiper motor and the brake booster there is a single brown with black trace wire. It normally is situated next to a black relay(fuel pump), which is attached to the firewall. It has a single plug...disconnect that plug, start the eng., check/set timing, switch off eng. and reconnect plug...and you're set.
Welcome back.....!

Brown wire/black stripe. easy.
Nico, would be correct on an 84, but 87 is different.
Thanks, guys. Yes, brown wire has black stripe but directions were exellent. I figured I was in the wrong neck of the woods. Has anyone looked at the manuals? They give no clue where the disconnect is located! Wish I still had the '57. That convetible had a trunk!
