Default High Speed Miss

Going down the straight at my usual track. 100+ mph in fourth gear. Engine started to miss on some laps. Some times it would run to 120mph without a problem.

My initial thought was Opti Spark. Mine is original at 125k miles. No SES light.

The miss seemed like a fuel pump/filter problem. Car ran fine when I backed off. The filter and pump are less than a year old.

Any thoughts?

Its possible its a bad tank of gas. Are you running 93? Hopefully its not that Opti. Possibly its a rev or speed limiter. I wonder if a log from Datamaster would pin point whats causing that. Maybe ask Alvin from PCMforless.

How long since you had the plugs & wires changed? I had a pretty bad miss because of a wire. Had a complete tune-up and it runs great now

It wasn't like a single cylinder missing, it was more like a shut down. If it were consistent I would think it was the fuel pump, but it was only sometimes.

Yesterday when I left work it hdid it again at very low speed but didn't happen again after the car warmed up.

I am assuming it is the fuel pump/filter and I'll swap them out this weekend.

My big question is, does an opti malfunction always throw a code and set the SES light?

Opti went in my '94 at 48,000. Your miss is not anything like the symptoms I experienced. When my opti went the idle went from 700 rpm to 2500 rpm and back and would not become stable. The engine would run smooth on acceleration and at highway speeds. Could also smell antifreeze. Hope this makes you feel better.

I had a similar miss, no SES light. It turned out to be the Opti. I would try the fuel filter and spark plug change and hope that that is it. Those are inexpensive repairs you can easily do yourself. I wouldn't spend too much time and money on a fuel pump and wires at this point.

It sounds like Opti. It will get worse with time . No codes or ses lights will show up. Thats what makes it difficult to diagnose. Your fortunate your car got that many miles out of it. I think you could have the record for most miles on a Opti. Wait to you see the difference new Opti, plugs, wires, fuel filter make. Dont let any Joe change your Opti. Go with reputable shop.
