Default Tips for installing a 6 speed......?

Hey guys I'm installing my new manual tranny for the first time. I'm doing an auto to a manual conversion. My problem is that I've never installed a manual tranny before. Any kind of hints or tips that you guys might have would be great. Here's kinda how I see it going down.

1.) Install flywheel to Crank shaft
2.) Install clutch and pressure plate
3.) Install Bellhousing with slave(?) cylender
4.) Bleed clutch system and get working
5.) Slide tranny in place and bolt to bellhousing

This is going to be a one man job with the tranny balanced on a hydraulic floor jack. I installed the bellhousing and tranny this morning to make sure everything fits and lines up, that was a tough job by myself. I'm sure its going to be alot tougher once I have to slide the input shaft into the center of the clutch plate. I'd really like some tips guys. Thanks.

Do a search like I did and you will find quite a few answers to your questions.

i'm in the process of doing a a4 to m6 conversion on my A4.

I have everything in...but, i'm having electrical problems...a little off topic. Ninetyfivevette has done the swap to his vette....check out his website...very helpful!!!

I'd put the slave cyl on after the tranny because it would be a bear to work around. Are you using a ZF??? I would try to find a friend to help. It was really easy to balance with two people. Also, to stab it into the clutch...I put in in 6th and tuned the output shaft to align it with the clutch it went in very easy. I'm sure you already know...put the piolt bearing in first.

Did you get eveything else like the pedals mounted, tranny tunnel cut, etc???

If you have any questions feel free to contact me!! Good luck!! Post some pics if you can.

I've been in contact with NinetyFiveVette. Everything else is in, petals, tranny hole cut, shift plate fiberglassed in. The only thing I have left is to swap the yokes on the drive shaft, install the tranny, and put the interior back together.

I just looked around for a pilot bearing, I need to stick it in the end of my crank shaft right? Thanks for the words of warning. I'm going to have to run out to NAPA when they open and get one. That just saved me alot of time and probably a new input shaft on the tranny, Thanks!

Any other advice out there please let me know. I'll see if I can get some picks uploaded within the next week or so once its all back together.

I had a TON of problems getting the trans to actually mate to the engine (that last 1/2"). Turns out if bleed your clutch system before installing the trans, you can push the pedal in so the input shaft does not bind on the release bearing. Since you're doing it by yourself, maybe you can rig something to keep the pedal to the floor. I think it was IBEAM700 or ID85 gave me that advise.

As for the pilot bearing, mine did not go in all the way. It stuck out perhaps 1/8". I thought that would be a problem, so I ruined one trying to get it in further. Also definitely invest in one of those install tool kits, the needle bearing version of the pilot bearing will distort very easily. A typical bearing puller does not work very well getting it out once it has been deformed.
