Default '92 - 700R4/4L60 Transmission Task...

Info: 1992, Automatic, Stock 700R4/4L60 Transmission

Second gear started to do the beginning-of-the-end "slip shift" into 3rd gear at higher RPM's when the transmission is at operating temperatures. I still have the broken Sprag unit. I've been searching archives on the forum for an hour or two, and I wanted to ask a few questions still unclear. I would like to purchase a professionally rebuilt transmission from a shop (ordering available via online) since local shops have quoted me atleast $1300 to just throw in a rebuild kit.

1. Does anyone recommmend any online shops or transmission builder where positive feedback and pleasing results occured? (Such as www.700r4l60e.com or www.maddog-transmissions.com) Any feedback from these shops in particular?

2. Does anyone know any local shops in MA or New England that are known for decent pricing and good results? (The 2 shops I thought were highly recommended in my area, had to rebuild a friend's Lincoln auto 8 times to get it right, and a friend's '97 Z28 auto trans 4 times)

The car is almost completely stock (drivetrain wise only) but I would like to look into engine mods/rebuilds in the future, but perhaps gears and a small spray (< 100) application this summer to hold my NFS over. This is why I wanted a stronger transmission than stock to prevent doing this again when I build a new motor. (I plan to only put a few thousand miles on the transmission before a new motor is placed in front)

Thanks in advance!

You might try these guys http://www.transmissioncenter.net/ . I did not order one from them, but I did use them for a lot of research. They really do seem to know what they are talking about. I had mine built local in North Texas, but it wound up costing me about $1700 after the converter and all. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/

I did read a lot about them (www.transmissioncenter.net) in the archives of the forum, a lot of testimonies about their services and products.

Of the people that purchased Raptor or Mini-Raptor transmissions, 3 forum members either dumped in an additional $200-$500 to repair/fix the transmissions, while 2 vowed to never deal with them again.

I appreciate the pointer, if anyone else has experience with them, please submit your opinion.

Some forum members here have had less that perfect experiences with e-bay companies. I have heard nothing but good about pro-built trans. No first hand experience with any of them though. I am sure you will get quite a bit of feedback on your question.

Keep in mind one thing also.. No matter who builds the trans for you, the TV cable MUST be properly adjusted upon installation, or the trans will die very quickly. The shop that build mine told me that over 80% of 700r4 failures after a rebuild are due to improper TV setting. Not defeding any rebuilder or saying all people who have purchased and installed from websites are dumb, but keep that in mind when checking out references that are excessivly (sp?) bad. Installation and break-in are as important as the actual rebuild.

I agree, I have heard a lot of positive feedback from pro-built transmission shops. I hope some members have some favorites they can suggest.

Excellent point, thank your for brining that up! I replaced the transmission in my '88 GTA, and was reminded from a local shop via phone, email, and paper work wise about the importance of TV cable adjustment. I quadruple-checked the cable adjustments on my GTA before I lowered the jacks, so I'll be sure to keep the same attention to the TV specs when it comes time to install the trans in my Vette.

I've seen inexperienced driveway-mechanics (some of my friends) destroy transmissions in the FIRST SHIFT down the road due to improper TV cable adjustments!

Thanks again!
