Re: ac slinging oil (Jays84Z51)
It indicates that the front seal is leaking, may be replaceable in 84, but usually calls for new compressor. If it's holding charge then it won't for long and R12 is getting expensive. Loss of too much oil will lead to other failures as well so it should be checked soon.
Good Luck,
Pete
PS, if you are headed for a bone yard compressor - have it throughly cleaned out before even trying it on the system. Been there, done that - it's a realy pain to clean out the entire system once "stuff" gets in there.
All shaft seals leak if the car sits long enough. Have it leaked checked. If you're not leaking gas, then it might be that the seal to the pulley bearing has deteriorated and thats where the oil is coming from. Shaft seals and pulleys are generally available. Unfortunately, to replace the shaft seal, you have to discharge the system whereas if it's just the pulley its fairly simple item to replace. If you have a low mileage unit and it is the shaft seal, I'd get it replaced as you never know how much wear and tear a boneyard part has seen. Also, the Last Detail shows a list of $249 for an '84 compressor.
Mine on re-circulate VIBRATES like the dickens ..but on A/C it seems MUCH Better. Could my compressor be going? I currently have a cracked a/c bracket. Getting it from my mechanic is becoming as easy as it is to get Bush on a telephone(We won't get to INSTALLING IT). I'll try that first, then hopefully things will be fine.
