Ok guys and gals, C4 L98 4x3 tranny. Im drivin down the road and my shifter starts grinding when putting it in third. After dinner im drivin home, same thing and stop the car. I lose my reverse. Soooo the next day, i pull the shifter apart and find that my reverse doughnut split from the reverse safety rod. Easy enough fix. I also found out that the center body mount shifter bolt was loose and the entire shifter assembly was movin around on every shift. After 330,000 miles, i guess it would.
So I torqued the bolt down and wanted to see if this was actually the problem with my third gear grind. Drove it around, no more grind. It was. But now it is difficult to find reverse. When I do find reverse, It is extremely difficult to get it back the four on the floor.
Question is, After the retorque, do I have to go under the car and adjust the linkage so the shifter tooth will allign properly for proper operation? Or is my shifter bad? Anyone have this trouble? Thx in advance.

If the shifter isn't sloppy now, you probably need to readjust the neutral alignment. You do this by adjustng the jam nuts on the 3 shift rods under the car at the trans. Get them adjusted so that the neutral gates line up, and the shifter will move freely side to side. You can do this by feel with two people... or if you already have the seat and tunnel carpet off, you'll see what I'm talking about.
Thanx Central. I thought this was the problem. Now I need time to play with the allignment. Good time to Shampoo the carpet under the seat too..haha. 330,000 miles... Luck keeps this beast going... but i think its the American engineering and the mobile 1 synthetic... Keep Vettin....
Thanx for the offer central. This place is great...Well I did move the reverse rod a bit and re greased the shifter and linkage. Its basically back to normal. Thanx for all your helps
