Default Need help getting bin

1987 vette, 165 ECM, $32B Mask (hopefully I stated that correctly).

I am trying to get (and then I'll need to read) the .bin file from my chip(s).

I actually have 3 chips from Formato - the original, and two others that they burned for me based on a few changes I requested (higher target idle, leaner at cold start open loop, etc). I'd like to compare the programming from each of the three. (Eventually, I'd like to learn how to program myself, but for now I just want to learn how to retrieve and view the files so I can start to understand them).

I have a laptop, serial cable (Thanks Morley!!!), and the ECM851 software. I tried doing a "PROM dump" using the 851 software, but could not get it to work. I may not be following the correct procedure (if there is one). I also downloaded the TunerPro software, but couldn't figure how to get the bin file using it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I am very new at this!

Thanks,
Dan

If the prom dump didn't work then you'll need a chip burner and have it read the chips. Be careful that you don't erase the chips or otherwise render them useless.

Hey Morley - glad to see you're online!

I tried doing the PROM dump a few different ways. What position should the ignition key be in for the dump? Do I need to choose different variables when those initial "starting" and "ending" questions come up? Before I rule out the 851 dump, I want to make sure I am doing it correctly.

At one point, it looked like it was starting to dump some data, but then I got something like a "data timed out, no connection" message. It dumped about 1 KB of data into the file. I re-tried several times, but I kept getting that message.

you need the key on so the ECM is powered in order to do the prom dump

I'm fairly sure 87 use $32 code, 88 uses $32B

if you get into burning your own chips look into to running $6E
it can be done
and the vette arap and apyp very good bins,
I've put them in camaro's pretty much in original form and seen significant power increases
