I am thinking of buying cut-outs. I have TPIS LT headers, 383 stroker, Iron Heads. What are the Pros and Cons to Electric operated cut outs? And where should they be placed? I have heard that they do not need to be closer than a foot from O2 sensor. Also I am thinking about going to a true dual exhaust. 90 coupe
Your main cat is the major cause of back pressure on the L98 system.
If your 383 is putting out say 450chp you need ~1,000cfm of exhaust flow. True duals with 2 1/2" pipes will flow 560cfm in each pipe for a total flow of 1,120cfm, assuming mandrel bent tubing.
Cut outs add a level of complexity that will not likely gain any power, IMHO.
I installed a cutout on my GN and gained 1/10 and 1mph in the 1/4. Not enough gain for the expense and effort. I think if you have a high quality, low restriction exhaust system, you should be OK without the cutout.
I just had my buddy give me his LT1 exaust and I installed it on my 86.
I would leave the resinator inplace.I removed it on my pipes and it is way to loud, even through the mufflers.I installed the cutouts from jegs just befor the mufflers ,and removed the spare tire.
I unscrew the wing nuts when I race.
I had a cutout on my grand prix a few years ago. Cutout motor died 2 times and it will never seal correcly when closed. You always have an exhaust leak sound. Just my experience
