My 85 w/the 4+3 trans is fuel fouling plugs lately,so I need to replace some ignition parts for more spark.
Besides a good set of wires, anyone know of a 1-step hotter plug that works well and also, what ignition parts should I buy.Just want to make sure I don't overlook anything.
If the spark is hot enough to run the engine, then the fuel wetted plugs aren't the fault of the ignition system. More likely leaking injectors, leaking CSI or pressure regulator.
Echlin makes top quality replacement ignition parts and has for decades. Available at NAPA stores.
The ignition in the l-98 works well. It does not need much to run strong. Brass terminal cap and good condition stock stuff is all thats needed in most cases.
However, if you have a more radical cam with some lope at idle, I've found that the CD/multispark ignition systems like MSD can smooth it out a little and overcome variations in tuning...
but since that's not you - stick with the OEM stuff and find out what the problem really is.
about 5% chance its an igntion problem. most likely injectors leaking, maybe fuel pressure regulator diaphram hardened due to gas supplier additives or owner added contaminants..
get or make a pressure gauge...you can use any 100 psi gage with hose and clamps (unscrew the schrader valve) or drop $40 on a gage that just threads right on...pressure should be 40+ psi running to prove regulator control, drop very slowly after shutdown if no injectors are leaking.
NEVER leave the gage on the engine when not testing...gage or adaptor leaks may be hazardous to your health
