Default Diff oil change problem

I have a 96 GS 6 speed. I changed the fluid in the diff. I only got 40 oz out of it (I do have 4:10's in there, that wouldn't make a difference would it?). I used the big hose on the pump and I used the little hose on the pump. I stuck those stupid hoses everywhere, back, forward, sides and all I could get out was the 40 or so ozs. I knew I was susposed to get more out so I kept trying for an hour or so.

I finally gave up, put the two bottles of additive in and filled the rest with 80-90 wt. GM fill. The bottles were 23 oz (the ones from GM and I couldn't quite get the second bottle all the way in). I put in about what I got out before fluid came out of the hole.

Can anyone guess or tell me why I couldn't get more out? The car was level (as close as I could tell anyway), up on jack stands.

Am I OK with what I did or do I need to start over?

I just filled mine up out of the car, after a fresh rebuild. It took 40 oz, plus 4 oz of LS additive.

How much did you expect it to hold?

Whoops, maybe I'm off on this. From what you're saying, the 40 oz + the two additives sounds about right. I was thinking more because the parts person at GM told me I had to have three bottles of the GM fluid (around 23 oz each).

I don't know exactly how much it's supposed to hold, but mine held 44, and that's an easy number to remember.

a few oz either way won't have any effect.

This topic came up awhile back so I checked my factory service manual, user manual, haynes manual, none of them mentioned the capacity. GM might not even consider it a service item for all I know.

Also, the recommended amount of additive is 8 oz. I put in 4 because it was all I had. Obviously put that in before you start pouring the second bottle of oil.

I agree with Central Coaster, you removed most of the fluid.

Thanks you guys. I feel better. I made an easy job quite hard!! I thought I had done my homework.

Now, to tackle the trans fluid change as soon as I get the 17 mm hex thing. At least it has a drain plug. Again, thanks for the help.

Jcrow,
I just got a cheap one at Wallmart. I noticed my latest Harbor Frieght has some for $5.00. I might stock up a bit as I worry about how clean the pump is after sucking that stuff out of there.

I just filled my D44 off the car, I did removed the cover and cleaned out all the old oil and inspect the gears.
It took 1 1/2 qts + 4 oz of additive.
