Z-51 rack code??

Z-51 rack code??
Called gm and seems 2 racks listed for 89. 1 is dicontinued. in his computer he shows the only way to identify them is a code on the dust cover (not sure if he said on the dust cover or on the rack itself). One is FH - which is discontinued and out of stock. the other is NS which few are still available.
anyone with a z-51 rack recognize these? any help is appreciated.

The parts book makes no distinction between a Z51 and a non-Z51 for 1989. The "NS" and "FH" codes refer to first and second design racks. There is no way, from the book, to suspect or detect a difference in steering gear ratios. It would appear, with a lack of qualifying options, that they both are used in both Z51 and non-Z51 cars. The "NS" is the 1st design and the service part number is 26011430. It is a complete "Gear, strg". The "FH", second design, service part number is 26018281. It is a "Gear, strg, (prtl)". "Prtl" means partial, which means without the inner and outer tie rod.

Interesting. thanks for the response. I didnt imagine it would be so hard to figure it out. How would someone with a sport ratio rack have got it serviced if gm can;t even tell which is which

Are you sure there was more than one ratio offered for your 1989? The parts book doesn't indicate there was. Do you want what you had? Or do you want the faster steering, regardless?
