I finally took my car to a mechanic to investigate a sort of barking noise coming from front/top of engine. Car is a 1994 lt1 with 97000 miles on it. Does not burn oil and gets decent gas mileage. He said the noise appears to be coming from opti spark but not 100 percent sure. He also said when noise is apparant, engine flutters a little. To do the job would be 450 labor plus parts. Has anyone had this issue before? If I do it, should I replace the water pump? I would hate to do the job and not repair the problem. If I drove the car this way, can I damage other parts? The noise does not follow engine RPM, so I and mechanic dont think it is internal. Opinions please.... Thanks

I would think that a noise in the opti would follow engine speed.

Do you mean barking like a dog? I've never heard that one before. If original, a new opti-spark and water pump are probably about due to be replaced anyway, but $450 for the part is outrageous.

First thing would be to put a scanner on it and see what codes are present. I have never heard of an opti barking, hissing, or mooing and doubt yours is either. Possibly a shorted coil wire, which would also explain the intermittent and poor running. Coilwire is few bucks and goes in in a minute or two. Opti is $400 in parts and same for labor (roughly). Do the simple things first.
