I've got an '84 with what I believe to be non-stock mufflers. In drive 1 and 2, high revs, they sound fine. But when the tranny shifts into a higher gear and the revs drop there is an annoying resonance. A very deep vibrating tone that my wife has a real problem with. Now some might say "What do I like and is it my car or hers?". Well, I enjoy having my wife along and am looking for a muffler with not so deep a tone. But something that will still say "fast car". Any thoughts on the LT-1 Targa in the Mid America catalog? I'm trying to find something that doesn't take any cutting so maybe I can do it myself.
I've seen many mentions of no "cats". Is that the catalytic converter, and if it is, how do you pass smog?
I swapped some aftermarket (no idea what brand they were) mufflers that were really loud for some used LT1 mufflers. What a difference. You can hear yourself talk normally now.
Not sure if they will be loud enough for your wants thought as they are really quite.
I got mine from www.vette2vette.com
Great guy to work with. I paid $105.00 including shipping for two w/ the tips.
greetings,
let me throw this out here. i have an 88 coup...everything stock. i read that the mufflers on the coup are a little "louder" then on the convertible. gm did not use the same mufflers on the vert as they did the coup. this because they said that the vert owners would not be able to put up with the noise - resonance.
so, i have resonance, a lot of it. the entire exhaust system is in great shape and cats in place. is there a generic brand muffler that will make this car silent?
i don't care if a lose an "hp" or two as it is a pain to have the stereo up 1/2 way to hear it. i also don't want to try the vert mufflers as mentioned above either. as it stands, at idle and while driving, it sounds like the care is extremely modded and into the 500hp bracket. any ideas for generic mufflers?..thanks!
if you want to get rid of interior resonance you can get a resonator. It'll be loud on the outside but inside will quiet down. My friend has a 90zr1 with full corsa exhaust and it's loud on the outside yet you can still hear yourself on the inside. The system came with a resonator. Another friend has the LT4 collectors edition. First he did muffler eliminators which made it loud. Then he took out the resonator and ran straight pipes through. He claimed it was louder but really, on the outside it was the same. Just on the inside it was louder.

Go to your local muffler establishment and ask for some "generic turbo mufflers".. they're not a bolt-on, but they're usually pretty cheap (I sell 'em for about $25 each here), and you'll need tips for them to finish off the look. Ask for offset in, center out.

Hope this helps ya!
thanks for the reply!...i really need to get the car quiet on both the inside and out and kill the resonance. i also need an almost direct fit and stock look. now that you mention it, i can't remember if the system is welded or clamped!...ugh!..

thanks for the reply...i don't want to do anything to the rest of the exhaust system, but only want to "swap out" the pre-existing mufflers.
