I am putting everything back in place after replcing the head gaskets due to an oil leak.
One problem I am having is the distributor will not go back in place. It will go down and connect, but there is still a 1/4" space where it is not seating correctly.
How do I get the distributor back in? Am I doing something wrong?
You have to line up the oil pump shaft. Yake the distributer back out and shine a flashlight down the hole you will see a slot at the bottom, this is the oil pump drive and it needs to line up with the bowwom of the distributor shaft.
to line it up get a lond screwdriver and turn it to the right position bu hand.
Once it is lined up properly the distributor will slip down the rest of the way.

Oil pump would be my first guess, too.
Remember; the dist shaft will turn about 45degrees as it's slid into contact with the cam gear, so don't line the slot and the tang up exactly....

Ancient racers secret. If you are positive the distributor gear is lined up correctly, have someone crank the engine a turn or so, while you gently apply some downward pressure to the distributor. When the slot in the oil pump shaft and the tang on the distributor gear line up, on the fly, the distributor will drop. Right, hippy?

Bump the starter and it'll drop right in.

Sure enough I didnt take the angle the teeth need to slide into place. Thanks for the help guys
I know it's a little difficult to bring the engine around to top dead center and doing this once is all you really want to do. Clicking the starter to drop the distributor works good for me too. It's just that if you're not indexed right you'll have to mess with it some more.
And make damn sure the wires coming out of the distributor are NOT
under the distributor flange-ask me how I know $$.
Yeah I did something similar when I had an LT1 I put the intake mainfold on and the oil pressure line was clamped inbetween, Didnt realize until I put everything back on started the car and I wasnt getting any oil pressure....luckily I didnt have to replace it.
