i have an 85 and for the center cat i just pulled it off ( it was really seized and rusty) and took a 1" X 3' peice of pipe and rammed the thing out. it will all knock out after some beating.

When I gots my 84, one of the muffs was missing. My first mod was Flowmaster 40's with a Dynomax after the cat pipe w/ the crossover. When looked into the cat I could see it was broken inside and cloged. I pounded the inside with a long screwdriver, tire iron, 2' long 3/4" piece of black pipe. Every so often I'd start it up to blow out the broken ceramic pieces ( the crap blew all over the driveway). Its not that hard to do.
When I install the headers in a few months I'll eather sleeve the cat or replace it w/ a 3" pipe. :
PS edit; "Biff Buyer"---I was thinking of getting the flag set for the front targa bolts from Mid-Amercia but I like your pop-ups better

Break the honeycomb inti shall pieces with a long screwdriver of pipe and blow it out the back. Do not try to blow it out through the mufflers or you will end up clogging them as well.
bash a crowabar in it with a sledgehammer, break it up enough and it will shake out.
You guys do it the hard way.
Used a long 1" concrete drill bit in a power drill.Gone in no time.
Be aware some suggest putting a pipe through the center afterwards as the turbulence of open cat can hurt performance.

Hurt performance with hollowed cat, been there done that, now buy that test pipe on ebay for 50 bucks. With hollowed cat i think u loose low end grunt plus it dont help to scavenge gases out so it it hurt performance.
don't forget...it's a federal offense to remove or gut the cat.
now, the problem is, the feds are leaving it to the states to enforce this law. If your state decides to enforce, or is mandated by the EPA to test emissions, you will fail.
I would suggest something like this:
get rid of the stock L98 exhaust completely, the 383 will love you for it. Install a pair of highflow bullet cats, an x-pipe and true duals out the back. You will pick up a ton of power, and even though you are techincally violating the law, you will be well within the spirit, and it will be CLEANER than with the cluster **** of a stock setup.
