I had some work done on my 96 and now the Service Engine light keeps coming on....here is the deal....the local Chevy dealer replaced....water pump...timing chain...plug wires....intake manifold/oil pan and valve cover gaskets.....after reasembly the Service engine light came on....after several atempts to fix.... they ended up.....replacing the distributer (opti spark).....and oxygen sensors....and that got the light out....I got the car back on 10 Mar.....I havent drivin the car since I got it back until today....and on the way in the Service Engine light came on.......so the fix lasted about 50 miles....has anyone had any experience along this line....I told my son in law about the problem and before I told him about the timing chain he asked if it had been replaced.....so Im wondering...does that sound like the problem to any of you experts out there.....thanks for any input...............
JMO but I feel that the Chevy dealership has the problem and not you. Hate to guess what they charged you for all those parts at list price and installing them at around $75.00 per hour.
At this point, take the car back and tell them they didn't complete the job they charged you for. You should of got more that 50 miles for what you paid.
I wouldn't panic yet, may be they just needed to clear the code. I know when setting the timing on an l98 disconnecting the ESC to set base timing may throw a code-in my case (87) just disconnecting the battery for a few minutes will clear the code. Take it back in-it maybe that simple.Good luck.

.
actually it wasnt too bad...in trying to fix the Service Engine light the dealer installed the Opti and all the sensors on thier nickel....but they dont seem to be able to isolate what is causing the Service Engine light to come on.....
On a 96 wneh the service engine lijht comes on the computer should set a code. Have the dealer pull the codes and post them here and we can go from there. The codes will tell you where the problem is.
