Default Tire Alignement question

I have a pretty bad vibration over 40mph after installing new shocks. It is very bad at over 80. The new tires are Goodyear GS3s, and the shocks are bilsteins. I think there are 3 possible explanations:

1. The new shocks changed the alignment.
2. A tire is out of round.
3. A tire was misbalanced.

I put almost 800 miles on the tires and I still feel the vibration. Is it possible the new shocks would change the alignment and cause the vibration that I experience?

I think the answer to one is yes. Many times and on other cars, it's required to have an alignment after shock replacement.

Since you had both done at the same or nearly same time, it may be difficult to separate one from the other.

It's always possible that a tire was balanced incorrectly, or not sufficiently for speed. 40 mph, however, is pretty low to get it wrong unless it's thrown a weight off.

The Hunter 9700 is a state of the art machine for doing balancing. Look up via google, hunter, find a shop local to you. This may be overkill tho. However, it may the cheaper of the two to do first.

Tell us what solves the problemo! And good luck.

I would have all 4 tires road-force balanced. If one of the tires is out of round, this type of balance will find the problem and by turning the tire to the optimum place on the rim, should take care of the vibration.

Okay. I called Goodyear and they will Road Force Balance all 4 tires for $100. I can deal with that. However, they want $400 for an alignment that they say will take 4 hours. What is up with that? Is this some new type of alignment technique? I am used to paying maybe a $100 for an alignment.

Hold off on the alignment. Road-force balance first and see if that solves the problem...it most likely will. Vibration is usually not related to alignment but balance, so start there.

If it turns out that you do need an alignment, go elsewhere. $400 is ridiculous!

Completely agree with Jef. Balance all four tires first. Then, alignment if needed somewhere else. No align I know of costs $400. And it'd be unusual to have an alignment that causes vibration. And BTW, $100 is about right; same quote I've gotten for about three places in my area.

Default Alignment

The C4 is the EASIEST vehicle there is to align. 400.00 ??should be jail time for theft. I bought an alignment setup from Eastwood and do my on alignments. Check into it, it's really not that hard and the cost of the alignment machine is a couple of hundred. Granted is not a Hunter but once it is aligned is easy to ckeck and make adjustments...GGG
