86 auto - horrible shifting

86 auto - horrible shifting
For the last month my 86 automatic has not been able to 'floor it' like it used to. It has been getting progressively worse also.
The problem is that it goes from 1st to 2nd fine, but has a hell of a time getting into 3rd. I have to completely baby it now for it to shift. It used to be that if I pressed on the pedal fast enough it would seem to bypass shifting and just rev the engine w/ no acceleration noticed at all.
Now however it will sort of burp... I'll press down too hard(which used to be normal) and it will get to about 20rpms then cut down to 13.. then I have to slowly get it up for it to shift..
What are the problems here? I am afraid it is going to be a new transmission for me....
