427 Small Block & Emissions
I'm planning on building a Bow-Tie 427 for my '91, but concerned it won't pass the strict California emissions. All the professional engine builders; Lingenfelter, TPIS, and the likes say it probably won't. Lingenfelter's 420 has a pair of ported Brodix 220cc racing heads, with a mild (219/219 @ 50) cam. Those heads do flow a bunch of air and definitely would increase exhaust volume compared to a 383. I'm looking more for the high torque the 4.0" crank produces and would'nt be too hesitant to restrict the heads a little to get by the smog. Does anyone have any real experience and emissions numbers from a large CU IN small block. Or how close are some of your 383's or 396's to just barely passing???

Install a set of low ratio rockers, like a 1.4:1 vs the 1.50+:1 that you are planning to use. The low ratio rockers will take a bit of bite away from the cam to smooth things up - and they are easily changed back after the emissions testing.

the guys at http://www.conversionxtras.com advertise an emissions legal 421 cu in LT-1 engine
