Tried to get my sons 86 Vette running after sitting for 3 years. Engine started right up, but the power steering pump was making noises. When the wheel is turned, the pump really moaned and growned. It has fluid. Is the pump bad or something worse? I seem to remember some issues with the GM rack and pinion being weak. Any ideas?
Suck all the fluid out of the resevoir, and refill it with fresh stuff. Might add a can of Lucas Power Steering Conditioner, then work the heck out of it.
Could have air in the system or the fluid has clogged some ports. I would flush and refill the PS system with fresh fluid. Use a good PS fluid an not ATF. You can siphon out the old fluid in the reservoir and add new fluid. Start the engine and with the front wheels off the ground, turn the steering wheel lock to lock a good dozen times. Repeat this 3 or 4 times to get most of the old fluid out.
You can also pull the return hose and let the engine idle. As the old PS fluid come out to a catch can, pour new fluid in the reservoir until fresh fluid comes out the return hose.
It's a good idea to change out all of the fluids after sitting that long. Coolant, brake fluid, tranny fluid (A4 or 4+3) and the differential. Use a good ethlyene glycol (green) coolant in a 50-50 mix with distilled water. Use a good quality DOT3 or 4 brake fluid like Castro LMA, Valvoline SynPower, or even the Ford MotorSports HD fluid. Use Dexron III fluid in the auto tranny or if you have a 4+3 use it in the OD unit. If you change the diff. fluid, remember to add two bottles of the GM positraction additive.

Did as suggested above and it worked like a champ. No more noise. Thanks
