Default Opti getting too hot?

Has anyone ever had this happen to an Opti, or explain why it could happen?
Car starts and runs great until it gets good and warmed up (180-190 where fans start cycling). After driving the car to this point, it will start to cut-out when it revs close to 4,000 rpm, and then get worse and eventually die (if I keep driving it). I don't believe it will ever die if I were to just let it sit and idle all day. After it dies, I don't get any spark at the plug wires. After a 20-30 minute cool down, it starts right up and runs.
I have ruled out fuel, replaced module (with grease), changed coils (with and w/out MSD), bypassed tach filter, tried different plugs, swapped ECMs, and scanned NO CODES FOUND.
Recently replaced the Opti with 'good' used optical sensor and wheel, new MSD cap and rotor ('95 vented style previously converted to my '92). After this, the car ran for about 1 day before acting up, and getting progressively more prone to die. The module WAS getting HOT so I replaced it (was the '92 original that I had relocated and was NOT greased). The new module is now staying 'cool', but did I burn up something in the Opti during this 1 day of driving with an overheating module?

I've had two opti failures. Both times the car would cut out when hot, then restart and run fine when cooled down.

GREAT! That's what I was a afraid of. I guess this is what I get for using anything Opti related based only on appearances.
THANKS for the input!
I think I'm off to the garage to soak myself in anti-freeze (deja vous?). OH JOY!

I just had my ICM fail and it acted the same way as you describe.I had a code 42 in module 4.1 no SES light.Check my other thread for the pages in the FSM to check it.Modules can be bad out of the box or last a day month or years.Hope mine does.

with as much motor as you are running, Joel, I would consider upgrading to the DelTech or LTCC setup.

Then the opti is only the optical trigger.

Thanks guys! Yes, Andy, I have been strongly considering the Delteq (the LTCC uses 8 LS1 coils, right? Probably don't have room for that), and if I had it to do over, back when I converted to 'vented/pin drive', I definitely would. I am now halfway disassembled and should have the Opti out tonight. Will be curious if I can see anything obvious when I open up the distributor.
Thanks again, Joel.
